Sports journalism in Ghana has not been doing badly though there is more room for improvement especially using the various platforms to effect positive changes and not used to push selfish personal agenda.
It really needs to buck up especially from those transmitting in the Akan languages. In Accra I can mention very few of those transmitting in Akan without noise. However, the noise makers are uncountable.
Anytime I have the time to monitor presenters outside the boundaries of Greater Accra region, I am elated because I seldom get that opportunity. Everyone who has travelled with me outside Accra can attest to the fact that I don’t joke with radio just to have a feel of how people are faring on air. Sometimes even at the expense of the primary purpose of being in the region.
The Ashanti region always stands out when it comes to broadcasting talents. Sometimes I am tempted to ask that ‘foolish’ question “why is he/she not in Accra?” As foolish as that question might sound, they always come to me and I cannot give the reason now, perhaps another time.
I was really filled with joy when a reader of the Media Watchdog column called my attention to the Kessben Sports team on Kessben FM in Kumasi the capital of the Ashanti region. This reader who was in Kumasi asked me to monitor the folks on Kessben FM because their TV station that’s on Multi TV digital box picks the feed from the radio studio so whatever goes on radio, is simultaneously on TV for those of us who are not in the reach of the radio station.
Fortunately for me, the time I was first prompted, they were on air but couldn’t catch much but promised to continue the monitoring from the following day. I am glad to announce to you that the team is awesome. Whoever thought of bringing that mid-morning sports radio talk show on TV must be a visionary. They call it Midfield Action!
As someone whose duty it is to monitor what goes on in the broadcast media to praise when a content, production, or host is awesome and shame when the same sets perform abysmally, the first face and the only face that is recognizable is the Jeffrey Asare. One man I can boldly say is the only sports analyst I have come across aside Jullian Mills-Beale who is now into academia in USA.
Jeffrey’s output on the show really didn’t surprise me that much because I know what he is made of when it comes to sports analyses and not football analyses most of the “sports analysts” do. His research depth, love for the less financed sports in Ghana like Boxing, Lawn Tennis, Athletics, Basketball etc. as for his knowledge on these sports, the least said the better.
Frederick Acheampong otherwise known as ‘Achee’ is another brain you cannot miss on air when it comes to sporting history and facts. He happen to be the head of TV as well from the research I made and that’s the reason I will applaud him for picking that sports show onto his platform; TV. I gather he got married not long so it’s obvious his sharpness on screen. Aside his brains, he happens to be the best dressed almost any day I am able to watch.
Collins Atta Poku comes with a wow factor on the team and that’s his language power. The man from what I have monitored understands and speaks Spanish, Italian, French and so he reviews the sports newspapers from these countries. This for me is a wow factor in the Kessben Sports team because they are even getting us the newspapers from these countries we won’t go looking for because we cannot understand. Aside his language power, his analyses are really deep especially those on football.
Oheneba Michael Nyame is one man that does the local sports news presentation and also does the commercial announcement on the show and the way he goes about to make you continue to stick with them is what blows me away. This can only be done by a genius and he is proven that he is with the flexibility with which he presents his local tit bits and the commercial messages.
Richard Anthony AKA Tony Montana does the foreign tit bits and happens to be the weak link in the team. He shouts when presenting which makes him annoying to listen to. I hope he stops the shouting because the tit bits can be done without shouting. I honestly think he has prospects though but needs to catch up quick because of the brains he is on with.
The icing on the cherry is the presenter Joe Lakka. They prefix his name with a ‘Sir’ and I am yet to know why but the man’s authority on the show is just beyond comprehension. He owns the show which is a big deal considering the brains he has to deal with. They have so much to say yet he controls them like personal pets making the show take shape from time allotment, preventing them from making malicious statements etc. the host who happens to be the head of the Sports department has a wild sense of humour that comes to bear on the show not forgetting the respect he earns from both guests and calling is admiring.
Last but not least, is the production team for the Midfield Action show on Kessben FM and TV. They are unbelievable with actualities on the show which is really amazing. Lazy production does not pay attention to stuff like that but are very integral to radio or TV shows. Their swiftness and attention on the show is spot on without any shred of doubt.
I hear there are more great guys on air especially during the mid-morning in the Ashanti region and though I haven’t heard, I believe because there should be a better competition to push these guys at Kessben to do what they do. Congrats Kessben Sports!

Sep 11, 2017 0There is too much chaos in our entertainment industry today and I am sometimes forced to ask myself whether or not we are serious to grow as an industry. From the days of ‘I told you so’ through to Osofo Dadzie’s Akan drama to our current movie days, I can’t boast of any...
