My love for radio and television is inexplicable and I am so optimistic there are other people just like me. I monitor these two any day any time for entertainment, education and information and I am won over when I see great contents displayed on air.
There are a lot of people out there who practically feed on radio and television for virtually everything, but I can tell you on authority that most of them are just not satisfied. Clearly, there is another group of people who also enjoy these telenovelas and other foreign contents for diverse reasons.
Undoubtedly, there are some good local contents on air (radio and television) that people enjoy so much which needs to be emphasized. But come to think of it, how many local contents do we have on air that could outnumber the foreign ones? I am sure you are getting the drift now. And even with the local contents, how many people enjoy them especially for television?
Do we spend and invest so much to conduct proper research which could bring about excellence and uniqueness for our stations? Listen to radio and watch television and you will come to the realization that the programmes on our airwaves are almost the same. It’s the same timing for morning show, mid morning show and news if I am not mistaken with virtually the same time for the drive time show.
Station Managers and Programme Directors, aren’t you tired of the same programmes and timing? Can we have a different feel of radio and television? Fortunately, there are so many digital channels in the name of digital migration yet we have not been served what we yearn to be served with.
Unfortunately, because we are so used to the format, it becomes so challenging for every station to change the stethoscope. But I think no professional will be so much perturbed by such negative feedbacks from people. Rather, he will do everything possible to coax them with his reach content.
Although the main show of Di Asa has just begun, it is considered as one of the most watched local contents on our screens because of its uniqueness. This simply means we love good things and if done well we will patronize it without thinking twice. (Di Asa has its issues though)
Amazingly, there are other local programmes on our screens, but can you be bold enough to mention them? Obviously, the answer is NO. You Only Live Once (YOLO) is another most watched local television programme. But the question is, for how long are we going to wait until they are back with the next season? I am sure another programme has engaged their viewer which I think isn’t good for the brand YOLO. Well, some of them will also say it is to keep the viewer in suspense.
The least said about some television contents, the better. Production for some stations is the issue here. Let me quickly commend all television stations for introducing new concepts and maintaining a certain standard at their stations.
I am highly optimistic most Ghanaians will cherish and accept their own if served well. Station managers and content managers, it is your ultimate responsibility to serve Ghanaians well so that they wouldn’t go chasing foreign contents when we know of initiating great ones.
I can say without any fear that the duplication of programme contents is what people are fed up with. Carefully research, create and execute something out of the ordinary so as to win the hearts of Ghanaians and trust me they will stick to your television or radio station as long as they live.
