A new entrant in the gospel music scene is about to unfurl his divine artistry through Urban Gospel Music, a style of gospel music that is fast gaining currency in Ghana.
Ghanaian-born US-based gospel artiste Don D is not happy about the many morally depraving songs on the airwaves. Speaking to Flex newspaper, he disclosed that sexually explicit songs corrode the mind and would ban them if he had the power to do so. “I’d stop the playing of promiscuous music on the airwaves if I had my own way. There are a lot these songs with naked sexual words that are destroying a lot of young people,” he said.
Don D is preparing for his six (6) track album but in the meantime, he is out with three (3) of them to whet the appetite of music lovers as he girds up to release the remainder soon. “I am currently out with My Praise, Ohemaa and Worthy, all taken off the My Praise album. My style is unique and by listening to my songs one would notice it,” he told Flex newspaper.
Urban Gospel Music is a modern form of Christian music that expresses Christian beliefs and as well gives a Christian alternative to mainstream gospel music. According to Don D, this is the right medium to preach the gospel to his target. “My reason for choosing urban gospel is to give different twist to gospel music. Many people listen to songs by Shatta Wale and EL. They would love that these songs are played at church but since they cannot, I need to give them something closer to what they are used to,” he explained.
Asked if patrons of gospel music should judge singers by the deeds or by their songs, he said no one should judge but by their fruits we shall know them. “Pride, arrogance and insults have clouded the industry. I have seen some up and coming artistes whose songs are not even out but are very arrogant. You hear some of them say things and you wonder if they are born again,” Don noted.
Don D is very worried about the negative image being painted by some gospel artistes. He believes that gospel musicians who shamelessly perpetrate evil and gleefully bring them to the public are not real gospel musicians. Don D, born Don Dennis Boafo, started music at the age of fifteen (15). He composed a lot of wonderful pieces and actually started with hip hop and ragga in 1995-1996.
