Seasonal Ghanaian rapper and singer, Ellias Ewusi Essel better known as Donzy, who has been in the main stream of the music industry for some years now has urged Ghanaians to support their musicians in order to bring improvement in the music industry.
In an exclusive interview with Flex newspaper, the rapper revealed that, Ghanaian musicians are doing their best to take the music industry to a different level in the world, but one major problem facing them is that Ghanaians are not supporting them to push the industry together rather they push and support foreigners. ‘ ‘Nigerians and South Africans are getting the recognition and more nominations from the world when it comes to music awards, due to the support they get from their people, so we need to give much attention to our own which would help us better the music industry” he stated.
Donzy continued to say that, there are some Ghanaian musicians who are doing well with their music across the world, like Sarkodie, Stonebwoy, Shatta Wale among others yet Ghanaians are not giving them the needed support in their career to push the music industry. There have been various campaigns by some industry players for more Ghanaian songs to enjoy massive airplay which other countries are doing to boost their industries.
Donzy broke into the main stream of the music industry with ‘Crusade’ when he collaborated with the award winning artiste Kofi kinaata which landed him some nominations at the 2016 VGMAs.
The rapper told flex newspaper that, he reinvests the money he makes from the gigs he plays back into the music he does and he is okay with that, but expressed interest and availability should any record label decides to work with him to him better. Donzy is already out with two songs from his camp ‘Heart away’ and ‘Pressure’ this year respectfullyand he is hoping to release another song, possibly an album before the year ends.
The singer further stated that he is working hard to see his name in the ‘artiste of the year category’ at the next VGMA. He finally appreciated the effort of Ghanaian DJ’s and presenters for their support towards the improvement of the music industry but also asked them to do more to help the music industry and also to put the Ghanaian music industry on the globe.
