It was an amazing night last Saturday at the Accra International Conference Centre when our hard working Radio and Television personalities were honored for their contribution towards the development of our dear nation.
Though the credibility of the awards scheme (RTP) has been questioned on several grounds, the joy and satisfaction seen on the faces of ‘deserved’ awardees after going through, criticisms, verbal and physical attacks just to get their viewers and listeners updated on issues will always surpass the public criticisms and attacks on the award scheme and we must commend organizers for putting up this great initiative to celebrate and appreciate the efforts of our role models who grace our screens with their looks and with their emasculate voices on our radios. However, awarding personalities of such caliber should be devoid of any shenanigans.
I believe the aim of every award scheme across the globe is to reward and award hardworking individuals who aside their exceptional display of professionalism on their area of work, qualify as role models for the younger generations.
Awarding an individual sometimes goes beyond how long or how old one is in his or her area of work but their ability to churn out positive stuffs to draw the attention of both the youth and the aged to their programe not forgetting how he or she carries herself about publicly. It becomes a bad sting on an award scheme if it mistakes good role models for rare talent.
I have personally followed Radio and Television personality Berlinda Addardey A.K.A Berla Mundi of EIB Networks and each time I see her on TV or hear her voice on Radio, it is obvious the lady though very young in age has become one of Ghana’s seasoned journalist with all the qualities of going international.
Aside her delivery and interviewing skills, she has been able to develop a brand devoid of any controversies and yet, she is currently one of the most talked about female journalists in our entertainment industry today and hosting one of the most watched programmes on GHONE TV (RYTHMS LIVE).
Upon hearing her nomination in this year’s RTP Awards, I was not surprised as I know what she is made of when it comes to professionalism and before now, I knew she was going to win the Female Entertainment Show Host of the Year due to the positive indelible ink she has painted over a short period of time. Though she did not win, I was a bit surprised about the nominee who walked home with the award in that particular category.
How Relevant Was Afia Schwarznegger In The Year Under Review?
Frankly speaking, I personally didn’t see the relevance of our dear sister Afia Schwarznegger with regards to hosting a television entertainment show in the year under review.
She admitted hosting the show for just three months and even if that period alone qualifies her, how viral was her programme (Angeltainment) on Angel TV as compared to Berla’s Rythms Live on GHONE TV? Yes, Afia made huge headlines both on the internet and in the various newspapers with regards to her marital disputes with her husband Lawerence Abrokwah which saw her naked video dominating our internets for weeks or perhaps months.
I don’t want to believe such negative popularity was also considered or formed part of the criteria for winning such an award. Clearly speaking, Berla in the year under review was at her peak. Whiles Afia was moving from one Television Staion to the other and finally settled at Angel TV, Berla on the other hand was raising the bars of GHONE TV by breaking hard-core news making sure viewers get the necessary updates there is to get. Even if Afia should pick an award from the RTP Awards Scheme, it definitely should not be this time when she has a lot of negatives surrounding her brand.
Doing so will only send a wrong information to the up and coming journalists and if that happens, the industry is forever doomed.
Why I Will Choose Berla Mundi Over Afia Schwarznegger
Berla Mundi over the years has carried herself and brand well. She has become a strong pillar and a good role model for many young talents and has commanded a lot of respect not only from dignitaries in the entertainment circles but within the political corridors.
Berla’s brand does not thrive on controversies and yet, she has won the hearts of many Ghanaians including outsiders. Her name is now a household name and giving her the award would have helped curb indecency from the entertainment industry.
Meanwhile, I congratulate all the credible award winners on the night, indeed you really worked hard and I pray you continue with your good works and to those who deserved to have picked home an award but, never give up for as long as there is life, there is hope too.
